There was a book that dealt with economics, politics and history that laid out a "Theory of Megapolitics" that tried to explain all of human history on similar terms. Their theory was based on "Geology, Technology, Microbes and Climate" and was very VERY eye opening. They explain so many many events in history and the several stages of civilizational development on terms of these four variables. Apparently they say we are now entering the Fourth stage of civilization (won't spoil it!). You might be interested in checking it up, it's called "The Sovereign Individual".
The main reason why I recommend it is because even though it was written in 1994 it predicted lots and lots of things that would happen and still keep unfolding to this very day.
