It was painted in 1889 by German artist Franz Stuck, and he did dark romanticist and expressionistic paintings, if I recall. This particular painting is foreboding and reminiscent of being within a dark forest, and suddenly looking up at the sky and seeing this horseback figure charging with a supernatural army.
