It all depends on where you are and your own devotion to the religion.
Im in Utah right now and I would never recommend being a member here. The people here treat their culture like a religion, and their religion like a hobby.
The basics of our belief are:
1. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
2. Repentance
3. Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins
4. Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Any Mormon missionary will tell you these same things. You can always ask them questions, but many will be pushy as they are told to push for baptism instead of conversion (t. was a missionary). I would advise you read the Bible then read the Book of Mormon if you really are interested. Make up your own mind on the matter of what you believe. Joining the LDS faith is a huge commitment and I cant reccomend it unless you are willing to give up the time and effort.
The positives though are that the community (usually) are very kind and helpful. They will look out for you. True members dont care about who you were, but care about who you can become. Its a religion focused on the future (usually).
