>>8078815no, i've never had the american version. we do eat something we call "macaroni and cheese" here but what that is is boiling penne and then crumbling feta cheese over it, adding butter and a bit of the pasta water and using the heat of the cooked pasta to melt the cheese and butter. it's still gooey but it doesn't have that yellowish color your version has.
we also make macaroni in the oven and it's called "oven macaroni" but that's more of a desert. we add milk, sugar and feta to it and, at least in appearance, it looks more like american mac and cheese. though obviously it's completely different in terms of flavor and texture. but the way that sugar caramelizes and the crunch it adds is amazing.
