They punish their pets for behaviors that are reinforced through poor conditioning. Dog barking? Yell at it to stop. Cat jumping on counters? Throw it off and yell at it. I cannot count the amount of times I've told women who I have dated or been friends with that their cat cannot associate their negative action with the resulting punishment. I was met with blank stares or dismissive platitudes every time. I know they're capable of self-reflection because they turn into emotional wrecks whenever they're forced to be alone for extended periods, but it's clear how averse they are to the idea of questioning their decisions.
