There's variety in any age group. The point is that the variety is the same across all of them.
When people see someone who is 60 doing something associated with older people they thing it's nothing noteworthy and just how things are supposed to be so the add it to an endless list of "this is what old people do" in their brain.
When someone who is 60 likes my little pony they sort it into the "weird guy" pile and dismiss the "60 years old" part because "this is not something older people do".
That's how the brain works.
