The idea is that a universe cannot be it's own cause on account of the fact that in order to initiate itself it would have to have existed before it's own beginning in order to cause itself, which is illogical. And so the universe is a contingent entity. An so it demands an entity without the constraint of temporality in order to stop an infinite regress of causes. This entity would be the first cause and it would be in philosophy what is called a necessary being, ie a creator. Formally
Premise 1:
Anything that exists has an explanation of it's existence, either in the necessity of it's own nature or in an external explanation.
Premise 2:
The universe has an explanation for it's existence, and that explanation is grounded in a necessary being.
Premise 3:
The universe exists
Premise 4:
Therefore the universe has and explanation existence from 1 and 3.
Premise 5:
Therefore the explanation of the existence of the universe is grounded in a necessary being (from 2 and4).
This would be a form of leibniz's cosmological argument.
