Being consistently pale and becoming red-skinned in the sun simply means you have a lot of red melanin which attempts to make you tan but fails. On the other hand, nordids without an aboundance of red menlanin have low levels of both types of melanin, but their bodies don't fail to produce the second, brown kind, when needed.
