I was an avid book reader on Greece & Rome like no other in my childhood. But I knew the remains of those civilzations (and their people) are just shades/shadows of their former selves. And (with some honest dread) accepted that and all I'd see were the ruins of a great culture & people. Men do the same with women ... they develop unrealistic fanciful hopium imagery of what they want to believe, neglecting or refusing to take a look behind the curtain of reality to see what lies beneath.
