Being born with the predisposition to work hard is also down to luck(as is having someone impart the correct values onto you at the necessary point in your life).
Merit doesn't actually exist because free will doesn't exist in any meaningful sense(this doesn't presuppose a deterministic universe before one of you retards brings that up). Of course, we should still act as though those things exist because it's necessary for any functioning society. Maybe if we enter a truly post scarcity society at some point because of AGI or something we can pull back the curtain and admit this.
