I was speaking to this fellow and he got agitated, when, after informing me that some politician didn't even know how much a loaf of bread costs, I asked him in turn how much a loaf of bread cost.
He waffled on the matter on ultimately settled on the response: It's less than five dollars. Then I asked him how it is he could rationally criticize others for not knowing how much bread cost when he couldn't name a specific figure himself.
I dislike this myth that gets passed around about a "one true bread cost" that all poor people are aware of. I visit the grocery store, and there is at least five shelves of bread, all priced differently, ranging from as low as a dollar to seven, eight, nine dollars even. I couldn't tell you how much bread costs due to every loaf being different. However, if you were to ask me how much I pay for bread, the answer would be zero, since I rummage through the day old's at the local bakery to obtain my bread.
