the long answer is that it's just a game of adult make believe, so nothing matters as long as everyone is having fun. if the DM is the only one not having fun that is intrinsically his problem to solve, even in a worse case scenario where the players are literally derailing the plot for the sole purpose of deriving fun from annoying the DM
it's not totally inconceivable that just 1 or 2 players is causing a problem to the detriment of the whole table, but in my experience it is basically impossible for a minority faction to cause problems unless the DM is in that minority or the rest of the table is full of doormats. if it's just one guy trying to start wacky shenanigans and nobody wants to have a discussion about why they don't enjoy that, it's still unbelievably easy for a DM to just nip every single ploy in the bud in-universe
