Sites that are detached from trying to the remnants of 8 or came way before it tend to be the ones to go towards, I feel like. And they should also be viewed as their own thing, rather than having to be exactly like what was good from before.
Plus, even if it's a smaller userbase and bit of an echochamber, I think there's still value in that if you yourself can settle into it. Not like most places won't accept all behaviour still, beyond calling you a faggot for it.

Gatekeeping is a term of the past, it's only a thing that applies for people using more sophisticated ways to keep people out, like way back in the day where you couldn't watch some stuff unless you figured out how to do it exactly in the way that the people who uploaded it wanted you to, because they deemed it that you don't deserve to watch it unless you used their methods.
So, it doesn't happen from anybody telling you to go away, sure. But rather like you said, with moderation simply not allowing you to stay around. And unfortunately, a whole lot of boards do suffer from that, in some way or another. It seems pretty much inevitable with any board at this point, that after long enough a janny decides to do away with the things he personally doesn't like. And the bigger the site gets, the closer that inevitability gets. There are places free from that at the moment, but they're obviously small and I doubt will last long without it happening, not like I haven't seen it happen before my eyes. It's pretty much just what it is, a shame. I've no idea why somebody can't just keep their dick in their pants and not go crazy with their imageboard powers, but, I suppose that with the kind of people you'll have around these, it's expected.
