The "Kek" meme had a similar origin to Cirnoposters, in the sense that it was closely tied to GETs. It began very early in 2016 on /pol/, and originally had no outside influence. The driving force behind the creation of Kek, /pol/'s resurrected Egyptian frog-god of chaos, was "meme magic", the idea that people's collective thoughts and wills could influence reality in a natural way (think social conformity/propaganda) and, potentially, in a supernatural way (think Warhammer 40k).
Meme magic was discovered much earlier when /tv/ had seemingly made the plane crash scene from The Dark Knight Rises happen in real life by memeing about it too much. This "discovery" was noticed by /pol/, and with a little insight from /x/, was originally put to use in the form of Winter-Chan and Ebola-Chan, who were supposed to be psychicly-manifested "beings" representing goals (almost like miniature gods/warp entities), and were attempts at driving refugees from Europe by making the winter extra brutal, and exterminating the human population of Africa by propagating the Ebola virus, respectively.
Little ultimately came from either of these two memes, but the same cannot be said of Kek. In early 2016, when Pepe was in power, someone on /pol/ discovered that one of the ancient Egyptian gods of chaos was named "Kek" (a /v/ meme from World of Warcraft) and was represented by a frog. Someone else found that Kek's Egyptian name looked exactly like a guy sitting in front of a computer, and Kek specifically represented "the darkness before the dawn", assigning him relevance to Donald Trump's much-hoped-for but extremely unlikely victory in the upcoming election.
