>>13356141Being born in '88 (based right) I only got to experience the tail end of this, and while I did have 56k for a few years, my family ended up with 300k. I forget what they were marketing it as, but I could play 1.3/1.6 CounterStrike or Age of Empires without too much difficulty.
I remember the days where my Dad would get angry for "tying up the phone line" because I wanted to download 700mb Age of Kings demo. It took more than all night, and we only had one connection for phone/internet. I have myself referred to the internet back then as the "wild west" and I had such high hopes for it to be the diverse place with everyone having their own little niche. Slowly websites like Newgrounds, ebaums world, and misc forums got swallowed by the big names, and here we are - most internet usage goes to the top 10/20 websites and that's it. The internet still has a lot of diversity but you really have to seek it out and even when you do find something cool, the communities just aren't the same or as vibrant, because most people just go to youtube. The Internet of today is great because of speed and quality, but the internet of yesterday is superior because it lacked normies. It was niche. It was used by people who cared what they were doing. Now you've got a bunch of retards who are permanently online as opposed to a time where you had to "log on" to the internet and be intentional with your time.
