The key isn't to ape in on whatever ticker jewbots are shilling when it jumps 50%. It's to search for who wrote more than a couple words about that ticker a week, a month, a quarter before that 50% jump. Then you might have someone worth listening to.
From there, VizualStocks, stage and technical analysis (remember, it tilts odds in your favor because other people use it too and humans are predictable), plus alerts are some of the handiest tools ime.
