>>9975989>in contrast to all other civilizations.Uh, no. The female making a vow is an expected part of the monogamy ritual in all cultures.
>Nuh uh they just make her say it in those other barbarous culturesOh, and that never happened in Europe? Europeans have never had even one shotgun wedding where compliance wasn't optional, and have never had arranged marriages where the woman wouldn't have picked that man if she had her choice of anyone.
This emphasis on female choice, freedom and independence is why it's traditional in Western weddings to have the father walk the bride down the aisle and hand her off to the groom, to emphasize that he, her father, has no influence over her choices and is absolutely not her paternal controller until she is wed to a man (who becomes her new paternal controller) like he is in Muslim cultures. Of course nobody would have women walk themselves down the aisle if they really believed that female choice was important and worth honoring, that's silly.
Just like how it's traditional for the groom's mother to walk her son down the aisle and hand him off, to emphasize that it's no big deal and certainly not an indication of any kind of traditional subordination of female will in the uniformly Christian nations of medieval Europe. It's not like the groom waits at the end of the aisle for his new ward to be delivered to him by her old warden, that would suggest the woman is considered to have some kind of property-like condition that allows her to be exchanged between men the same way a cow might be. That's not very Christian!
