One thing I will add, about the Madoc legend, is that the Vikings were in the New World earlier than that. But the Phoenicians were likely here even earlier, at least in the 1st millennium BC. Diodorus even tells a story of them discovering a vast land out in the Atlantic and deciding that they would bug out to it if Carthage fell (which it did).
