Usually Sino-Korean words are more formal but that's not a rule, so you have tons of words with the same meaning... Korean, like most East Asian language seem to have a ton of words that mean the same thing and at the same time they have a considerable amount of words that have 5 or more meanings. When you are used to it it's ok but at the beginning it's very confusing.
