Women(and some men) wear septum rings to attempt to cover up their face, it's no joke. They want to cover themselves up out of fear of being exposed.
Whatever it is they don't want you to notice about them is not always that obvious, but their fear of being seen as their "naked self" is what underpins the decision to get the septum piercing.
