My dad turned into an alcoholic and an abuser over time. He eventually was kicked out when I was 12 or so. He was ok on his own for a little while, eventually turned into trailer park trash with all kinds of weird shit going on. I'm 25 now and don't hate him anymore, but he doesn't have any relationship with me or my siblings.
My mother is remarried now but did an amazing job at raising 3 kids/teens on her own. Very stable, never looked for gibs, and raised us right. My stepdad is a great guy and while not exactly a father figure, taught me to not be afraid of self-reliance.
