As crazy as it sounds, the 3 people were likely humanoid aliens who now worked for Us government. They were part of a breakaway humanoid group who flies in our part of space now and then (not the shirt grays or the gray colored human looking 5 foot ones). This group is remnants of the Atlantis era humanoid space aliens.
In the book, the original author who supposedly killed himself right after the book (alltough one news exists of a person claiming he staged his own death snd went hiding because they were after him).
