I don’t think anyone in your country can say today that their great great grand parents stepped off the boat and died of cholera, was killed by Indians crossing the plains, or froze to death the first winter. These were natural filters that the new environment used to weed out the weak, unprepared, or unlucky. The survivor’s bias is pretty heavy today. You can’t compare the immigrants from two hundred years ago to the ones you get today. It just doesn’t make sense.
