Maybe its just because I'm from the west, but when I think about traditional American culture its that of pioneers and cowboys.
The summation of American History education, and consequently the public perception, has been boiled down to revolution > slavery war > holocaust > 9/11. But we have had a lot unique and interesting pockets of culture in America. The "southern gentleman" plantation owner comes to mind, and the old west stuff I already mentioned. but we left a lot of it behind.
And we do borrow a lot from Europe, but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We are the bastard child of a lot of European nations.
