>>17571040I had a rare opportunity to hold one of three molds of Mary's face. Back in the 80's or 90's some maniac struck her face with a hammer and broke pieces off. What followed was the most intensive art repair attempted at the time. They took every picture they had of her face and created a perfect recreation of the full face with the broken parts, then they took marble from the back of the statue (so the rock type and grain match) and recreated the missing portions. The three molds they used filtered through various hands and I got to hold one held by an art professor. Her face was larger than my two hands together and the sad, serene expression staring back at me changed me in some way. I was haunted by it. Loved that statue ever since.
