well i say "grew tired" of "flesh" but what i mean is that they were slug people which was really limiting, so they went the magic construct route. they were one of the first 2 races to make it to the space age which is more or less an equalizer when it comes to advancement, so the others have more or less caught up by the time of the setting
a similar but different twist on the idea is the "architect" race. they were perfectly content with their bodies, but their planet was going to become uninhabitable before they were going to develop the capability to just leave so they focused on figuring out how to put everyone on USB sticks in the meantime. eventually the survivors started making robuts to put people back into, but they're really expensive and time consuming so most people are still just waiting around in storage
