I think it started with images like this. Vatniks wanted to insert themselves into the Trump movement to ride the wave. However, that wave was mostly motivated by generating salt and trolling people. Now, if you look at places like /k/ and some parts of /pol/ people are just trolling vatniks for massive seethe instead.
