In rivers look for eddies and back waters where fishe can hang out and fin without much effort and watch fud swim/ float by.
On fast moving small streams the slow spot is up against a steep bank tucked under overhanging grass. From these places the fishe can dark out after food and then pop back in place to hide and stay rested.
You also have to under stand the the food cycles what the fishe eats.

Trout fishe are half part since and half part art of the deal. You “present” part of the of the fud the fishe is looking for.
I have caught big fishe on the tiniest flys. And I have caught fishe on the ugliest flys as well.
