That is why there are so many recurrent themes in many folk tales and even, or especially, in religious texts. In a way, it is a little like a statistical sorting process, a filter: the good stories survive and carry on. The bad stories, i.e. those that do not resonate, fall in disfavor. There is an underlying evolutionary psychology that is common to most of us that are the reason for some stories resonating with us. There are deviations and exceptions among people, but they must be severe to alter someone's psychological structures on a level that fundamental as I mean to be talking about here (psychopaths are examples of this).
Many stories "work" because they resonate with us on that fundamental level of psychology.
