It depends a lot on your body type, if you're short and wide then it's one story, if you're slim and high then again you have other pros and cons
I have been doing TKD as a kid for like 7-8 years and it did fit me quite well, had a great trainer who was making us run and move nonstop for 2.5 hours so I had stamina, endurance and mobility 100x more than any other guy I got into fight with during the school times
Not sure how worth is it to start it when you're mature because it requires lots of stretching, if you do boxing / kickboxing for 6 months you probably can start getting into fights with average Joe, but in TKD it takes few years to get your body ready for tough shit.
Once you're there with all stretches and stuff, it's highly unlikely that anyone would expect that kind of fight from you since its not popular discipline and leg attacks are very brutal for unsuspecting people since almost anyone you will encounter will think of some sort of grappling or boxing, and would be totally unprepared for your techniques
However it's certainly not a street fight discipline, if you want to defend yourself from niggers and drunks it's absolutely not the way to go, there are way more effective alternatives
