Pertaining to the health complications resulting from the increased intake of fast food by the masses, many people argue that it is the responsibility of the government to step in and dictate higher taxes on these problematic food items. In my opinion, I categorically agree with this opinion as I think this is the most effective way of battling the many health issues directly resulting from the fast food industry.
The explosion in popularity of fast food back in the 1980’s has directly lead to a mass increase in obesity and other serious health problems in the majority of countries. Mexico, for example, used to be one of the healthiest nations on Earth prior to the introduction of fast food franchises, after these fast food corporations were allowed to open their doors there, the country quickly became a leader in terms of obesity and cardiac disease, both of which are attributed directly to the unhealthy levels of Sodium and sugar present in the junk food diet.
Secondly, the main reason fast food can have such a massive and viral effect around the world is the fact that it is relatively inexpensive and – by definition – convenient and fast to acquire. Therefore the optimal way to curb the mass intake of fast food in any given country is for the relevant authorities to raise taxes against such food items. Not only would that put a significant dent in the consumption of fast food, but it would also encourage such venues to provide alternative, healthy items on their menus since these would not be taxed making them more viable to sell. Such a tax by the government would also encourage people to cook significantly healthier meals at home which would not contain as many harmful elements as their ready-made counterparts.
In conclusion, fast food items are immensely popular around the world which is a grave problem since they directly cause obesity and other major health complications(trunc)
