The amount of energy and resources needed to sustain a high speed rail for more than 300 miles (480km) between major cities is just not worth it yet. An ideal high speed rail would connect cities that are very close to each other, eg. within about 150 miles (240km). Which means they would work best on the east coast of the US (where cities are closer together) or in Texas (between the Fort-Worth to Dallas to Austin to Houston to San Antonio).
