I believe what you have OP is what we in the trade call: finally losing it.
Here in mexico we call it:
>ya se le van las cabras/he loses his goats Old people tend to be sent to do easy tasks like herding flocks of goats. Once dementia sets in they tend to forget how many they had and will come back with less, essentially meaning that they are mentally feeble.
There is not much to do other than enjoy life to whatever mental capacity you can, and not volunteer for any goat herding.
