There are people who don't know the internet outside of the mainstream social media sites. Like they're too afraid leaving their circle. They know it from their smartphones and were never aware how it was before it. I mean social media wasn't really new - before facebook there were sites like sogamed, mymtw etc. years before it. Lots of sites had some form of social interactivity like guestbooks.
Storage space was at an absolute premium and uploading even small files reliably was a huge hassle. So sharing content was somewhat a huge pain in the arse.
I think the Internet can still be the wild west if you use it properly and know your sources and stuff. The fat days are still there but require effort and knowledge... which desu you needed even back then. Most of the illegal stuff is still on the surface web findable with mainstream search engines. Hiding in plain sight is still the best hiding spot.
Being the born in late 80's gen age and the stage you are at your life is also a factor which skews the view. Most are too busy or don't have the energy for doing major stuff or simply wasting time.
But I'm not denying that it went to shit in many areas. I mean youtube comments read like bot posts with the same "jokes" posted over and over at absolute absurdum. It's seems to be more artificial than ever.
