2) Recorded history could have been preceded by a previous civilization, which was destroyed and basically rendered post-apoc (by Aliens, or in this movie the aliens running away). And very few facts about it could have persisted, in the form of mistranslated myths.
3) The government has secret facilities were Jump Rooms exist, allowing colonial expansion off the planet without anyone knowing about it. Who may be exposing the rest of us to Dangers as a result of it (ie, similar story in the Quake 1 video game).
