I guess it's comparable to being in a kind of a mosh pit, opposed to just hanging out in a smaller scale place with people you've at least been acquainted with. The latter is simply better to regularly be around, in long-term. It makes way for people to recognize each other and carry on conversations a lot easier, and lets somewhat of an actual community build up around the place, whether that's for the better or not. And time just weeds out most people, yeah. With all that considered, I guess it just comes down to preference.
