Christianity was a source of virtue for Europeans for the last 1000 years or so. So yes, it was the abandonment of Christianity which caused "muh degeneracy", although not directly.
There two issues, however, which are never addressed by those raising this argument.
First, the question of why people abandoned Christianity? It's important to answer it, because the remedy in the form of "returning to it" is at stake.
The answer: loosing faith in the authority of God, and his supposed will, which is the ultimate reason to upkeep virtue as it is preached by Christians. You start questioning if that so called "God's will" isn't by chance just a myth, a story, with nothing behind it except for millenia of repetition, and the whole chain leading to a motivation to be virtuous falls down like a house of cards.

The primary reason for people starting questioning the authority of Christian doctrine was the discovery of the World, the myriad of other cultures, beliefs, religions and Gods, so different from European, and the naturally occurring question in every curious head: "could it be the case that all I believe in to be the divine order is just a myth and a bunch of stories as I perceive all those other cultures to be such?"
