NASA had a goal of sending a manned mission to an asteroid by 2025 and a manned mission to Mars in the 2030's. We had already thoroughly studied the Moon in the Apollo missions and left a bunch of gadgets and stuff up there, including a mirror that scientists on Earth use to point lasers at to constantly gauge the distance between the Earth and Moon and use that info in studies, the mirror is still in use. No one has been out as far as Apollo astronauts before, and Mars is 200 times farther from us than the Moon, and Werner Von Braun is no longer with us, so Trump's proclamation will actually set us behind a little in the race to Mars.
