Ghibli movies are intended to be made for people of all ages, which is why practically all of their movies are filled with fantastical and innocent whimsy. With the only exception I can think of being Porco Rosso, which, incidentally, is the only one I could consider that has an atmosphere of coolness. But with stuff like Vampire Hunter D, they know their audience wants protagonists that are slick, suave, and are willing to throw down at a moment's notice. All perfect ingredients for cool.
