Wagner = divine music, noble, gesamtkunstwerk
This piece, the last area of Tristan und Isolde, is magnificent. And the performers are already exhausted, "Isolde" has to sing her swan song at the end. Wagner forced all energy out of his performers. It even drove some of the more mentally unstable performers to madness and suicide.
Kirsten Flagstad is my second choice, same area, but unfortunately the recordings of that time weren't very high quality.
