If they're only exploiting them, couldn't they just blackmail them by threatening to fire them if they refuse? I can't imagine they would have many other options since I believe many of them were something like slaves depending on the time period
Still, I do wonder what it would have been like to be such a maid. If the master is kind, it probably wouldn't have been such a bad arrangement. But I don't think I could stand only being the mistress. I wouldn't want his attention split on some other woman. What is more romantic is for a gentleman to marry a maid and raise them up out of poverty. You're the expert on romantic and... mostly romantic... literature. Aren't there any books like that?
