>>12341513well yes the claim that he could read literature but not understand people or converse at all is just impossible. i think he's exaggerating in both directions though. he was probably a bit better at reading/writing than speaking/listening but conversationally passable at both
i suppose that's the crux of the problem really. he makes it sound like grinding isolated vocab is some secret sauce to becoming conversational very quickly at the cost of just having a funny accent when in reality it's just a shortcut that lets you sound like a 3 year old early then grind grammar even harder because you have to catch up and have already started building habits with wrong assumptions.
