>>9678043>On the Allied side the Brazilian expeditionary corps FEB were involved, on the side of the Axis powers the German Wehrmacht. The battle is considered to be the toughest battle in the Italian campaign of World War II, in which Brazilian forces participated. [1] The Wehrmacht maintained a line along Monte Belvedere - Monte Castello - Monte della Torraccio Ridge in the Renotal near Bologna. The Grenadier Regiment 1043 of the 232nd Infantry Division held the Monte Castello-Reno sector to the Brazilians. [2]
The FEB was part of Task Force 45. On November 24, the FEB began a three-day attack that failed, killing 34 soldiers and wounding 153. On 29 November, the FEB again attacked unsuccessfully with three battalions and additional support from artillery and tanks. In the following six days, the Wehrmacht positions were attacked with artillery and aircraft. On December 12, the FEB launched a surprise attack, but the U.S. artillery threatened the attack and it came to a halt. Both sides held during the winter. In February, the new 10th U.S. Mountain Division, with the support of feb. On February 21, the FEB attacked and captured the entire positions. [3]
