I'm probably not going to understand any of the references even a little bit.i think you can enjoy dante for the first time without understand the references. but being familiar with virgil, ovid, lucan, horace and homer and stuff and maybe even reading it in italian if you can to appreciate the dactylic hexameteres will certainly will help you appreciate it as a masterwork!
