The most successful design we had that we actually deployed in combat was the Zrínyi assault howitzer. It might have been riveted, but it was reliable and performed well both as an infantry support weapon and a tank destroyer. Zrínyi crews usually had high morale, even by the end of the war.
It wasn't particularly advanced technology-wise. But it worked and it worked well.
