When the Makhnovshchina sent their reply by way of executing Trotsky's messenger, it was Trotsky who ordered the imperialist annexation of Ukraine. Lenin was only too happy to turn over Ukraine to the Germans at the Treaty of Brest-Livosk, but as usual the reds were ready with a sharp knife to plunge into the backs of the anarchists.
When Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman begged Lenin to release the Makhnovists from his prisons, he laughed and told them he had no anarchists in prison, just some "kulak bandits."
