She was a young woman, and you can see that she is tired. Therefore her judgement is likely to be impaired by this fact. This could explain why it would be easier for her to accept the advice of an authoritative male, even though his reasoning may not have been sound.
There is considerable evidence that women are sexually harassed more often than men, and perhaps she did not feel safe in the car with a male stranger. Also, if her daughter wanted to get out of the car shortly before the accident then this could suggest that they had been arguing about something.
If you consider the scenario, then it is clear that she has a good reason to get out of the car. This would be because her daughter might have wanted to stop arguing with his father and stepmother, and had this been achieved by getting out of the car then things could have improved.
However, if the daughter had wanted to get out of the car in order to make a complaint about his father then this could explain why she would feel it appropriate for her to remain inside. This may be because she felt that it was her responsibility as a mother to stop or at least deal with any disputes between family members.
I am therefore inclined to believe that it would have been better for her to get out of the car. This is because there was a good chance that she could have resolved an argument between family members, which might otherwise not be as easy to deal with.
The fact that she did not get out of the car suggests that she was either reluctant to leave her daughter alone in a strange place, or because there may have been a 'tug-of-war' between her and her husband going on, which could explain why they were arguing about something.
