everything that created communities back in the day has now been commercialized. you could download client side skins/models and completely change the look of a game. maps were a total free for all.
unironically minecraft is going to be the last gasp of the open modding era of multiplayer video games. there's too much money to be made and too many businessmen in the industry now to ever let communities like that exist again.
