So hydro power would be an easy explanation for generating power by the fact that the sun causes water to evaporate and rain down at a higher elevation. So right there we have energy from the sun being converted into potential energy in the water which is looking for any reason to flow down because of gravity.
You convert that to electricity by using a generator.
Even in nuclear power plants it's essentially about using water to power a generator.
There's not really a closed circuit between power stations and consumers because as you already mentioned, the energy is obviously used to power things.
The misconception I think is that electrons themselves are the energy which they aren't. They're just a carrier.
