Good thing about going across the USA is you get a good sense of the land. Especially being in the middle, pro tip, choose cities if you have to stay in one which are close enough north, and aren't coastline cities or areas. Also be in the white areas, as white as can be. The more blocks you are away from the hundreds of thousands of non-whites in any collapse, the better.
